Comparing Types of Survey Methods

Most types of survey research methods will fall into one of three broad categories:

  • Exploratory research – Focus is on developing ideas and insights as opposed to collecting statistical data. It attempts to determine relationships between variables through experimentation as opposed to descriptive, which determines variable relationships through observation. Causal research has two objectives: 1) To understand which variables are the cause and which variables are the effect, and 2) to determine the nature of the relationship between the causal variables and the effect to be predicted.

Exploratory research

  • Focus Groups- A group containing people that fit the description of a target sample group. They answer questions on the issues and subjects being researched and are maybe the most common use of exploratory research.
  • Expert Surveys – Broad open ended surveys on a topic given to experts in the topic fied. They are designed to encourage a large amount of content as feedback. Results are then used to create a survey for non-experts on the topic
  • Open-Ended Questions – Any open-ended question is exploratory in nature.

Descriptive research

  • Defining a characteristic of respondents- Define a behavior, opinions or attitude sabout various issues, product or anything else
  • Measuring trends in data – Determine changes in a particular characteristic over a period of time.
  • Comparing groups and issues – Analyze opinions and attitudes of different demographic groups towards something to better target marketing efforts.

Casual research

  • Effective advertising – Testing advertising campaigns is one of the most common uses of casual research.
  • Testing changes – Any time something new is tried, results can be compared with an area where changes weren’t made
